During World War 1 some girl becomes an orphan, and sent to nunery, where before the final vow, she has doubts about this whole thing. The whole question ends up in an exorcism, but to twist things up, there is a native american element, which rises the question what forces are in play actualy. Until things get convoluted for directorial decisions.
At the very end the movie connects itself to the Amityville franchoise as a prequel, showing Father Jeremiah (see the 2005 remake) reading the girl's diary, which is full of sketches for the Amityville House.
